Our Story
Like many others in 2020, we decided it was time for a change. We closed our businesses, and left our jobs in Ontario and started a new life in Cape Breton. We searched across the country and looked at a few different locations before finding what is now Bear Paw Cottages on West Lake Ainslie, Cape Breton. It was an aged cottage property that needed a tremendous amount of work to get it up and running again. We spent many hours and months renovating the four little cottages, from building new foundations to installing new kitchens, bathrooms, floors, paint, and furnishings. We faced many challenges along the way, including a well that went dry a week before Christmas, but we persevered and opened for business in July 2022, fully booked for the season. Our hard work paid off, and we were delighted to meet guests from all over the world who came to stay in our cozy cottages. We fell in love with the Cape Breton community and the sense of belonging that comes with it. We also discovered many hidden gems in the area, such as Egypt Falls, Inverness Beach, and endless trails for hiking.
